Don’t lose your website visitors when they land on a 404 error page
We’ve all been there at some point: clicked on a link to take us to our chosen content, and “Whoops! There go my bloomers!” – you are on a page with 404 error – page not found. Gah!
You know how YOU feel when you land on one of these pages, especially if it’s a boring default design that doesn’t even offer you the option to navigate to the business home page to start over. Boo hiss.
However, it doesn’t have to be this way! Ohh no. Be super creative and bring a smile to your 404 page visitors by injecting a little humour into the situation.
Check out my 404 error page link and the one that I set up over on Giraffe CVs – an apology and a little fun design can sweeten your website visitor’s experience and help them stay ON your site.
Now, you COULD go into your WordPress Editor and start messing about with your (Child) theme’s php and design your own custom 404 page.
But…unless you’re a hard-core coder, you don’t wanna be doing that! Trust me. All you need to do is design a new WordPress page that fits in with your website, and if you want to be as funny as these websites, then take a look at their pages for some inspiration.
Got your page designed and published? Super smashing! Now: copy that page URL. You’re going to need it in a minute.
I use a little plugin called “404 To Start” and it’s a wee gem. You can get it here.
Install the plugin and activate it. Then find the plugin in your Dashboard menu. Click on it for the settings.
See my image for how to set it up. Paste in your “Ooops 404” page URL (you can call it whatever you like by the way!)
There you go. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
