tweety birdHow to complete your Twitter Profile to encourage follow backs

There is nothing worse. Someone has followed you on Twitter and you click on their profile to find out who they and what they do and there’s absolutely NO information on there to give you an inkling of what they will be tweeting about, if they are a personal user or a business. So annoying! So what do you do? You don’t follow back.

Here are some handy hints to improve your Twitter profile and help get more follow backs:

You have 160 characters to engage people! Get creative about your business. My heart sinks when I see a profile that includes, “We are a solutions-focused organisation that enables…” YACK!!! *hits the Snooze button* How boring is that?
Do include ONE #hashtag (at the end of the profile) if you like because they are searchable by Google but please don’t use too many as it looks desperate and spammy. I recently counted 14 hashtags in one business profile and I didn’t follow the account back. You just know what sort of tweets this account will produce. 100% SELL SELL SELL and ZERO engagement. And this wasn’t your typical dodgy “Buy Your Followers” Twitter account either; this was a UK business with quite a decent product. Invest in some Twitter training if you’re not sure what to do with #hashtags.

Add in the geographic location of your business. People do #LoveLocal and will actively search and select for the nearest supplier to them (if they feel they can trust your brand – refer back to “hell in a handbasket hashagging”).

DO add a photo or logo. Please avoid the default twitter “Egg” image. Believe me, people really dislike this.Add a current URL to your website, blog or online shop. Amazing how many don’t add a link.

Don’t forget to utilise your twitter.com page. The new Header layout is just like a Facebook cover but BIGGER! It’s a free piece of advertising space so ensure your branding is consistent across all your social media accounts. Why not use to promote a special offer or a Sale?
